What to do when you lock your keys in the car?
Locking keys inside the car is one of the most common roadside emergencies. It happens to everyone — in a rush, after shopping, in an underground garage. Before you act, stay calm and assess the situation.
Step 1 — Check every door and window
First and simplest: check whether every door is really locked. Sometimes a rear door or the boot is still open. Also check whether any window is cracked enough to reach a lock or button.
Step 2 — Spare key
Do you have a spare key at home or with someone nearby? That is the fastest and safest fix. Call someone who can bring it. Most modern cars come with two keys — keep the spare separately.
Step 3 — App or remote (modern cars)
Many modern cars (BMW Connected Drive, Mercedes Me, Volkswagen We Connect, Tesla and others) let you unlock remotely via a mobile app. If the app is installed and you are logged in — try it. Make sure the car is online (e.g. via its built-in SIM).
Step 4 — Insurance and Assistance
Many OC/AC policies include Assistance that covers emergency car opening. Check your policy or call your insurer. The service may be free under your package.
📋 Popular Assistance packages in Poland
- PZU Pomoc — car opening under PZU Auto
- Warta Assistance — locksmith service with AC
- Allianz Assistance — help with locked keys
- LINK4 Assistance — arrival and opening
- Generali Assistance — car locksmith 24h
Step 5 — Professional roadside assistance
If the options above are not available, the best solution is professional roadside help. An experienced technician opens the car with specialist tools (air wedges, probes, pick tools) without damage to bodywork, paint or electronics. Arrival in Warsaw is usually 20-30 minutes.
Methods you should NOT use
- Do not force a wire or coat hanger — you can damage door seals, wiring or the central locking system. Repair often costs more than roadside help.
- Do not smash a window unless necessary — only in extreme cases (e.g. a child or animal locked in a hot car). Replacing glass costs 300-1500 PLN.
- Skip viral internet tricks — most fail on modern locks and can damage the car or create legal risk.
Child or animal locked in the car
This needs an immediate response — especially in summer. Call 112 and roadside assistance at the same time. Police and firefighters may break a window to save a life. Do not wait — temperature in a hot car rises fast.
How to prevent locking keys inside
- Always keep a spare key at home (not in the car)
- Use a lanyard or carabiner for keys — harder to lose
- Check whether your model has a mobile unlock app
- Save a roadside assistance number in your phone
- When leaving the car, always check that keys are in your hand
