Waiting safely for roadside assistance

A breakdown or minor crash on the road is always stressful. Before you deal with the car, take care of the safety of yourself, your passengers and other drivers — that comes first. A few simple steps genuinely reduce the risk of a serious incident.

Pull over and turn on hazard lights

If possible, move onto the shoulder, emergency lane or a lay-by and turn on your hazard lights immediately. Try to stop where you're visible from a distance, away from bends and crests, so other drivers notice you in good time.

Set up the warning triangle

Place the triangle behind your vehicle: at least 100 m on motorways, 30-50 m on rural roads, and just behind the car in town. It's not only a legal requirement — it's a real warning for approaching traffic.

Put on a vest and exit safely

Put on a reflective vest before you get out — especially at night, in fog and rain. Exit on the shoulder side, never towards traffic, and move yourself and passengers behind the crash barrier.
