When your car won't start in winter

Winter morning, you get in the car, turn the key and... nothing. The engine won't start. It's one of the most common winter problems — frost spares no brand. Here's what to do step by step and when it's worth calling roadside assistance.

1. Check the battery

At -20°C a battery can lose up to 50% of its capacity. If the starter cranks slowly or you only hear faint clicks, it's almost certainly a dead battery. A weak battery older than 4-5 years usually dies during the first frosts.

2. Jump start with cables or a booster

Got a second car and cables nearby? Connect in order: red (+) to the dead battery, red (+) to the good one, black (–) to the good one, and the other black end to bare metal on the dead car. Wait a moment and try to start. A booster is safer and more reliable — it starts the engine without a second car.

3. When to call for help?
