When do you need a flatbed / tow truck?

Damaged engine or gearbox
If you hear knocking or grinding, or the car suddenly loses power, driving on can deepen the fault and multiply the repair cost. In that case it's better to transport the vehicle on a flatbed straight away.
After an accident or collision
After a crash the car is often undriveable — damaged suspension, wheel, radiator or leaking fluids. A flatbed is the safest way to get the car to a garage without risking further damage.
No spare wheel or a locked wheel
